Bulgarian association for persons with intellectual disabilities (BAPID) is an association of intellectually disabled people, their families and their friends. The Association was established in 1993 and in 1996 the Council of Ministers acknowledged its national representation.BAPID is registered in the Central Registry for public benefit organizations.
The mission of Bulgarian association of persons with intellectual disabilities is to defend human rights, non-discrimination and life in dignity of people with intellectual disabilities guaranteed by secured access to quality services, developmental training and employment opportunities for them.
BAPID follows its mission:
- lobbying for the interest of people with intellectual disabilities and their families at the Government, the local authorities level and the international community.
- taking active part in improvement and development of social care provision for young and adult people with intellectual disabilities placed in residential homes in order to guarantee their basic human rights.
- developing own network of community Family Counseling & Consultative Centres as alternative to social exclusion of people with intellectual disability and their families.
- promoting inclusive education and mainstreaming of children with special learning needs.
- implementing new community based social care services to address the individual needs of the intellectually disabled customers.
BAPID is a member of the National Disability Integration Committee (with consultative functions to the Government) under the Council of Ministers and the National Disability Council, (consisting of similar nationally represented disability organizations) as well as a member of both - Inclusion Europe – The European Association of Societies of Persons with Intellectual Disability and their Families, and Inclusion International. Thus the organization has an access to practical and theoretical experience of a working net of similar organizations on the territory of whole Europe.
We work with high-qualified professionals from various spheres concerning children and persons with intellectual disabilities and their families. BAPID spreads its activities over the territory of the whole country through 49 local structures.
